Greater Houston Anesthesiology (GHA) has provided leading perioperative and anesthesiology services for the foremost medical facilities in, and surrounding, Houston, Texas. Now known as USAP-Texas, our anesthesia providers perform over 200,000 anesthetics annually in all areas of anesthesiology, including cardiovascular, neurosurgery, obstetrics, orthopedics, and pediatrics.

In order to uphold our reputation for high quality, each anesthesiologist holds and maintains a license to practice medicine in the state of Texas and is Board Certified or Board Eligible. All of our personnel who provide anesthesia are current in their ACLS certification.

USAP-Texas provides anesthesia services in over 30 medical facilities in the greater Houston area. Our practice environments range from the foremost hospitals in the world’s largest medical center, community medical centers, and surgery centers across the greater Houston area.

Gary Flores, MD

Gary Flores, MD, is Chairman of the Clinical Governance Board. He is Chief of Anesthesia and Chief of Staff at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, where he is also Chairman of the Medical Executive Committee and a member of the Board of Trustees.

Dr. Flores is a board certified anesthesiologist who has been in practice for over 25 years. He graduated from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and completed his residency at Baylor College of Medicine affiliated hospitals.

Derek Schoppa, MD

Derek Schoppa, MD, is Vice Chief of the Clinical Governance Board and Chairman of the Human Resource Committee. He is also Chief of Anesthesia at St. Luke’s Woodlands Hospital, Lakeside Hospital, Lakeway Regional Medical Center, and Lake Travis Anesthesia. He also serves on the Medical Executive Committee at St. Luke’s Woodlands Hospital and Lakeside Hospital.

He is a graduate of the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Laura Dew, MD

Laura Dew, MD, is Chief of the MHA Division and a founding physician partner of U.S. Anesthesia Partners.

Dr. Dew is a member of the USAP Clinical Quality Committee and the USAP Compliance Committee. She is Chair of the local Continuous Quality Improvement Committee.

Statewide she serves in the Texas Society of Anesthesiology House of Delegates and on the TSA Patient Safety, Government Affairs and Credentialing committees. On a national level she serves on the American Society of Anesthesiologists Quality Management and Departmental Administration Committee and the Det Norske Veritas Advisory Board and Standards and Appeals Board. She is the ASA liaison to Det Norske Vertias.

Dr. Dew is a board certified anesthesiologist. She received her Doctorate of Medicine at the University of Florida and completed her residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. She also attended the Anesthesia Business Group at the Wharton Business School and completed the American Society of Anesthesiologists Certificate in Business Administration.

James Guo, MD

James Guo, MD, is a board certified anesthesiologist. Dr. Guo has served in leadership positions at Greater Houston Anesthesiology since joining the practice in 1995. He is the past President of Greater Houston Pain Consultants.

Dr. Guo is currently the Chairman of the Credentials Committee at Memorial Hermann at the Woodlands and a member of the hospital’s Quality Committee. In the past he served as Chief of Anesthesia and Chief of Staff at Memorial Hermann at the Woodlands. He has served as a director, delegate and an alternate delegate to the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists and is a delegate to the Texas Medical Association. He is the past President of the Harris County Medical Society North Branch.

Dr. Guo received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School San Antonio.

Benjamin Harvey, MD

Benjamin Harvey, MD, is a board certified anesthesiologist specializing in general anesthesia and chronic pain management. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas at Galveston.

Hector Herrera, MD

Hector J. Herrera, MD, is a board certified anesthesiologist. He attended medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. From there, he did his residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. 

Dr. Herrera is the Chief of Anesthesiology at Methodist West Houston Hospital, President-Elect of its medical staff, a member of the Medical Executive Committee and sits on the Board of Trustees.

Tony Kim, MD

Tony Kim, MD is a board certified anesthesiologist and Chief of the HA Division. He serves on the USAP Clinical Quality Committee and on the local Clinical Quality Improvement Committee. Statewide he serves on the Texas Society of Anesthesiology Patient Safety Committee. He is the current chairman of Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center anesthesia peer review committee.

Dr. Kim serves on the USAP Information Technology Committee. He is as an EPIC Physician Champion, EPIC Physician Builder, and EPIC content expert on the anesthesia build team with CHI St. Luke’s Health System.

Dr. Kim’s other responsibilities include being an attending anesthesiologist at CHI St. Luke’s Health, Texas Children’s Hospital - Pavilion for Women’s Hospital, and St. Luke’s Woodlands Medical Center.

Dr. Kim was chief resident at New York Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical School.  He received his medical degree from UMDNJ - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Bachelors of Science from Stanford University.

Dai Lu, MD, Ph.D

Dai Lu, MD, Ph.D, is a board certified anesthesiologist. Dr. Lu graduated from Shanghai Medical University and completed his anesthesiology residency at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Lu also holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology from University of Texas Graduate School of Biological Science.

Jacky Ralston, MD

Jacky Ralston, MD, is a board certified anesthesiologist and past President of Greater Houston Anesthesiology.

Dr. Ralston is Chairman of Anesthesiology at North Cypress Medical Center and also serves on its Medical Executive Committee. He completed his residency at Baylor College of Medicine and is a graduate of Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans.

Cenk Ozdogan, MD

Cenk Ozdogan, MD, is a board certified anesthesiologist with over a decade of experience practicing at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital. He is a graduate of the Baylor College of Medicine, where he was fellowship trained in cardiovascular anesthesia. He is the Chairman for the Greater Houston Anesthesiology Compliance Committee

Shoyab Panchbhaya, MD

Shoyab Panchbhaya, MD, is a board certified anesthesiologist and Chief of the BWA Division of GHA. He is Chief and Medical Director of Anesthesiology Services at Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital. He graduated from The University of Texas at San Antonio Medical School and did his anesthesiology residency at Baylor College of Medicine.

George Parker, MD

George Parker, MD, is a board certified anesthesiologist and has been practicing with Greater Houston Anesthesiology since 2007. Prior to entering medicine, Dr. Parker was a process design engineer. He has drawn on this experience in helping build EMR systems at St. Luke’s Hospital and Lakeway Regional Medical Center. He currently serves as an EPIC Physician Champion for St. Luke’s Hospital.

Dr. Parker graduated from Oklahoma State University with a BS and MS in Chemical Engineering. Both his Doctor of Medicine and Anesthesiology Residency degrees are from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Bernard Shich, MD

Bernard Shich, MD, is a board certified anesthesiologist and Chair of the local Legislative Committee. He is a practicing anesthesiologist at HCA West Houston Medical Center. Dr. Shich is a graduate of the UAG School of Medicine and completed his residency at both the Albany Memorial Hospital and Baystate Medical Center.

Kyle Stanosheck, MD

Kyle Stanosheck, MD, is a board certified anesthesiologist and a member of the USAP Clinical Quality Committee.

Dr. Stanosheck assists with the orthopedic program at Memorial Hermann Hospital at the Woodlands. He is the past Vice Chief of Anesthesia at Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, where he was also a member of the hospital’s Medical Executive Committee.

Dr. Stanosheck received his medical degree from Creighton University Medical School and his anesthesiology residency at the University of Missouri.

Ron Osborn, MD

Ron Osborn, MD has been an anesthesiologist with Greater Houston Anesthesiology (“GHA”) since 1996. During that time he has been an active participant and Chairman of multiple committees and boards. In 2009 he was elected President of both Paragon Healthcare Management Group (“PHMG”) and GHA.

In 2011, Dr. Osborn transitioned his primary focus to Paragon concentrating on strategic business development. Under his direction GHA was able to integrate outside Anesthesiology groups for the first time since the practice’s formation. Dr. Osborn’s focus on an aggressive strategic plan and growth model led GHA to partner with U.S. Anesthesia Partners.

He now sits on the USAP Board of Directors and continues to be an active participant in in the growth of USAP at a national level.

In addition to his role on the USAP BOD and multiple local USAP committees in Houston, Dr. Osborn is a member of multiple committees at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital since 2003 and served as the Service Chief of the Department of Anesthesiology from 2011–2013.

Dr. Osborn is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, American Medical Association, American Board of Anesthesiologists, Harris County Medical Society, Texas Gulf Coast Anesthesia Society, Texas Medical Association and Texas Society of Anesthesiologists. Dr. Osborn graduated from Texas A&M University and received his Doctorate in Medicine from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He completed his anesthesia residency at Duke University Medical Center.

Michael Contreras, MD

Michael G Contreras, MD is a member of the Clinical Governance Board in Houston. He was Vice-Chief of Anesthesia at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital (MWB) from 2013-2016 and became Chief of Anesthesia at MWB January 2017. He is a member of the TSA House of Delegates. Dr. Contreras is a board certified anesthesiologist and in 2009 obtained the Diplomate of Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography status. He completed his medical education at the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine in Rochester, MN and internship/residency at the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education.

Sherif Zaafran

Sherif Zaafran, MD

Sherif Zaafran, MD is the President of the Southwest Division as well as the USAP Legislative Liaison. He serves as the Chair of the Memorial Hermann Hospital System Perioperative Services Committee as well as the Chair of the Joint Council on the Perioperative Surgical Home. Dr. Zaafran was appointed by the Governor of Texas in 2016 to serve on the Texas Medical Board and will begin serving his first term at the start of 2017. Dr. Zaafran is a certified anesthesiologist by the American Board of Anesthesiology. He completed his medical education at University of Texas McGovern Medical School at Houston and his residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
